Rafael Advanced Defense Systems has handed over its 1,000th TYPHOON naval weapon system, with the milestone unit delivered to the Israeli Navy.

The Israeli defense technology company states that the TYPHOON system is currently deployed by 25 navies and maritime forces worldwide, including the US, Canada, and Australia.

Rafael CEO and president Yoav Tourgeman said: “The delivery of the 1,000th TYPHOON system reflects the continued trust of navies and maritime forces worldwide in Rafael’s operational capabilities.

“At a time when the naval arena is becoming more congested, contested, and relevant than ever, from the protection of vital shipping lanes to countering advanced aerial and naval threats, the ability to provide operational vessels with a precise, rapid, and multi-layered response is a strategic necessity.”

The TYPHOON system, described by Rafael as a stabilised and remotely operated naval weapon station, has seen service with the Israeli Navy and other international operators since 2000.

Recent deliveries included new TYPHOON Mk-30c weapon stations, which have been installed on Israeli Navy vessels such as the Sa’ar 6 corvettes as part of ongoing upgrades to their combat capabilities.

According to Rafael, further TYPHOON and Mini-TYPHOON systems are expected to enter service in the coming years. The company says these new units will replace older weapon systems and expand the operational range of the Israeli Navy’s fleet.

Rafael reports that TYPHOON systems are capable of engaging both surface and aerial threats. The system is said to have demonstrated effectiveness against small, fast, low-signature targets such as UAVs and drones.

Features described by the company include advanced fire control technology and tracking systems, high-capacity ammunition magazines, and the ability to switch rapidly between ammunition types based on mission needs.

The TYPHOON also supports Air Burst Munition and High-Explosive Proximity rounds.

The modular design of the TYPHOON system, Rafael states, allows for flexible installation across a range of vessel types in response to operational requirements.
