Babcock innovation takes centre stage at UDT

Monday, June 25, 2018 by Babcock International

Babcock International, the highly-skilled engineering service company, is letting technology do the talking as UDT Global gets underway in Glasgow.

Supporting the likes of the UK's Royal Navy and navies from Canada, Australia, Spain and South Korea, UDT provides the perfect platform for Babcock to share its whole life support capability with speakers being deployed across a number of topics including; launch and recovery, submarine combat systems and platform design systems. Delegates will also have the opportunity to discuss immersive virtual reality training with the team, as plans to deliver non-pressurised submarine escape, rescue, abandonment and survival training (SMERAS) for the Royal Navy takes shape at Her Majesty's Naval Base Clyde.

Recent trials of LiFi (Light Fidelity) within Babcock Devonport's 'Connected Facility' also highlights how the company has harnessed innovative smart wireless and condition based monitoring to support onshore maintenance programmes, drive cost savings and increase asset availability. All of which provides the possibility of future offshore applications for the technology. Representatives will be at UDT to discuss the innovation.

New for UDT 2018, Babcock is supporting a unique platform for 11 start-ups and small businesses to showcase their latest innovations. The specially commissioned Babcock Innovation Zone provides a break for SME's into highly competitive markets where cutting-edge ideas can be traditionally difficult to uncover. And with exhibitors deploying specialists in fields from submarine disposal to knowledge management, the space will provide an ideal networking opportunity.

Each company from the Babcock Innovation Zone will also take to the stage and present to an independent judging panel sharing their innovative designs and concepts before a winner of the best innovation is presented with a trophy by Jim Sibson, Head of Research and Partnerships at Babcock.

Looking forward to the pitches, Jim Sibson said: "The Babcock Innovation Zone will provide an invaluable opportunity for the exhibiting companies to promote their cutting-edge technologies within the context of the defence industry. Babcock understands the importance of collaboration and this is why it has been so important to get behind the Innovation Zone and its exhibitors."

Over the course of UDT, Babcock is also promoting its commitment to STEM and its partnership with the UK's Year of Engineering 2018. A talk will be hosted by Rear Admiral Tim Hodgson, Dr Heiko Borchert, managing director, Borchert Consulting & Research AG and Will Pope, Engineer at Babcock on the benefits of a career within the defence sector. Additionally, Babcock is sponsoring poster sessions in association with several UK universities and institutions across the enterprise.
