Speedy manoeuvres, immediate data transmission, high quality surveillance and position intelligence are key elements in the active battlespace. Ground troop electronic systems are being employed by future soldier technology. Personal data processing and storage arms the soldier with more instant data and decision-making capacity as well as position reporting. Omnetics offers a dismounted soldier personal interconnect system called "COBRA".
The COBRA interconnects power and signal routing of electronics into the soldier's clothing. It aims to meet the NATO Army Armament Group (NAAG) specifications that focus on Dis-Mounted Warrior programmes. The connector can slide through the standard MOLLE straps of a soldier's vest, attach to a standard MOLLE Strap, or integrate directly to the fabric. The eight contacts can handle five amps each on 24 AWG wire and are IP69 sealed in a mated state. The current NATO specification calls for USB 2.0, but fluid demands may require additional protocol support such as VGA, Ethernet, camera links, five gigabit digital signal routing, and others. The low profile connectors use plunger contacts for easy cleaning on the battlefield.
The use of high-speed instruments has greatly extended the accuracy of portable weapon efficiency. LIDAR instruments, for example, survey their environment using lasers to create an accurate depiction of the ground below. Omnetics designs weapon capable interconnect systems that match the higher speeds of these photo ranging and measurement scopes. Military space satellite systems used in surveillance and position management also often use Nano-D connectors from Omnetics. The Nano-D is small and lightweight, retains contact through shock and vibration, and is also sealed with low-outgassing polymers that meet the NASA space materials specifications.
